As a dual Canadian-U.S. citizen, let me just say: taxes get extra complicated (and much more expensive). Not to dissuade anyone! I’m deeply grateful I have Canadian citizenship. But getting it was a lot pricier and took longer than I think some folks expect - and this was the case even though I’ve spent most of my adult life there, went to school there, and haven’t even visited the States in almost a decade.

I honestly vicariously live through your beautiful expat lifestyle. I’m sure I romanticize life abroad.
On the other hand, I just spent the evening with my moms and sisters watching a semi-dumb, semi-good movie. Nights like this wouldn’t be as easy or spontaneous and there would be a lot more pressure on the movie to be good if we lived in different countries.
That tax thing is a deterrent, but so is knowing your tax dollars are still being used to bomb people.
I wish I could get my cats to take their shoes off before they come inside the house. It feels like 99% of what gets tracked in comes in on paws.
Unfortunately, the US is one of those (I think rare) countries where you still have to file taxes even if you don’t live there unless you give up your citizenship (which I’m seriously considering, but I worry I won’t be able to get to my parents or sisters if needed). But you at least pay way less to the US gov’t this way, so there’s that.
Come to Thailand! Bring your cats, moms, and sisters! Of course, there are hurdles with that, too. BUT the ability to stop treading financial water and have easy access to affordable healthcare and housing has been life changing. xoxoxo
