Ladies, thank you so much for this generous conversation! Julie, I think what you said might be more offensive to lesbians than to nuns 🤣😜 I’m just kidding, I don’t think it was offensive at all.

I have only just started reading it, but I am so moved by the denseness of the language – I started this book about 15 years ago right after it came out and I remember now thinking holy shit this woman is a poet.

I also want to say thank you so much for the recommendation on the craft of memoir book – my husband and I bought it sometime back to read together and we haven’t gotten into it. Ironically, I think I need to read it to learn to write about my ex-husband in my writing, I look forward to seeing how she describes how she chose to write about her ex husband.

And lastly, I’m going to put my husband in touch with you, Christina, he does a lot of writing about recovery from religious trauma and religious baggage. Is sub stack is called “We aren’t supposed to talk about this.”

Hi, Kristen! I'm so glad you enjoyed the episode! Please do share how you like The Art of Memoir--it has a prominent space on my bookshelf and I find myself referring to it every time I'm in a rut with my writing.

Also, I'm going to check out your husband's Substack! It sounds like my cup of tea.

Thank you, Kristin. Yeah, Karr is truly a master of language. It’s the kind of writing that pushes me to be a better writer myself. I bought the Craft of Memoir audiobook and found that I broke some of her rules in writing my memoir—HA! But, also I take the things I read in craft books as suggestions rather than commandments. Memoir is a tricky thing because the characters are real, and one of them is you—the narrator deciding how the story of REAL people is told. It’s great to have this platform where we can try things out on our audience though! You and Christina are both talented writers, and I enjoy reading whenever you post.

I love how chaotic this graphic is getting! <3 I still don't know how I feel about "lit" but I am excited to listen to your take!

Yoda, this comment prompted me to ask Claude to make a new infographic for me and it’s so awful. I’m going to post it in my next newsletter.

Maybe we could do some Nick Flynn? Or better yet Rob Roberge? James Brown? Why am I thinking of guys books? Maybe cause you hit all the good ones in that graphic. I have read all the quit lit so where’s my brain?
